Red Level’s junior varsity and varsity football squads held Zion Chapel to eight points as the Tigers went on to rout the Rebels 58-8 Thursday night at Bobby Dye Stadium.

Tigers coach David Godwin said he couldn’t have been more pleased with what he saw from his boys.

“I thought our effort was as good as I had hoped for,” Godwin said. “One concern we had going into the spring was the depth on our offensive line. They performed well.”

The JV team went straight to business in its time on the gridiron as it shot out to a 22-0 lead after the first quarter.

To start the second period, the varsity squad made quick work to find the end zone when Tigers quarterback Wesley Holley connected with Jeffrey Perdue, who made a one-handed grab in the end zone to give RLS a 28-0 lead with the good extra point.

RLS took a 36-0 lead when John Lee ran around the right end for about a 20-yard touchdown rush to widen the gap.

The Tigers found opportunities to run and pass the ball according to the situation they faced.

RLS stuck with the running game more because it was working pretty well, Godwin said.

While the Tigers played a good game on offense, their defense shined when it had to.

ZCHS couldn’t stop the front three — Ontaryo Nearor, Perdue and AJ Nicholson — from penetrating its offensive line and forcing a few fumbles that went the Tigers’ way.

“Defensively, our assignments were good, but we missed a few,” Godwin said. “(Nearor, Perdue and Nicholson) did a good job of penetrating the line.”

Starting in June, if not before, the Tigers will get back to work to get ready for the fall season by focusing on getting in shape in the weight room and focusing on learning plays on offense and defense.

This win over ZCHS will carry over into the summer months, Godwin said.

“It’s definitely a positive to be successful in your spring game,” he said. “It really helps kick start your summer program.

“We’re going to turn this thing up and hopefully be success then (in the fall) as we were (Thursday night),” he said.

Those who were in the stands probably noticed three new coaching additions on the sidelines. Calling the plays was former RLHS quarterback Russell Rigdon. Rigdon graduated in 2005, and played on the 2004 state semifinals team.

The other two coaches were Mark Price and RLHS alum Dewayne Robinson.
