Pleasant Home blew a 5-point lead going into the fourth period and the Eagles lost 42-34 to Geneva County in the Class 1A, Area 2 championship Monday night.
The Eagles played a good more than three quarters, but didn’t finish, PHS coach Bradley Stephens said.
“We got to finish ball games in oder to beat the good ones,” Stephens said. “We didn’t do that (Monday night). It’s not necessarily that we played bad. Our game plan we had — it worked. They went man defensively and we didn’t answer. We didn’t execute like we needed to.”
Pleasant Home’s Chase Gunter led the Eagles with 10 points. Jon Cole Chesser and Troy Fantroy added nine points each.
In girls action, the Lady Eagles fell to GCHS 50-28.
The score isn’t any indication of how well the game went, PHS coach Jerry Davis said.
“We played pretty darn good,” Davis said. “We cut it to five points with minutes to go in the third quarter. (Brianna) Dozier and (Cassidy) Godwin fouled out and that took care of our inside. It kind of fell apart from there.”
Davis said his girls pressed the Lady Bulldogs and even got them to turn the ball over a couple times.
“We didn’t get anything of it,” he said. “The score is no indication. The ball game was a pretty good ball game. I’m not disappointed. We went over there and gave it a shot.”
Dozier and Godwin had eight points each to lead the Lady Eagles.
Ashley Williamson, Godwin and Dozier had eight rebounds each, which was something unusual, Davis said.
Geneva County’s Lacy Stafford led the Lady Bulldogs with 26 points.
“We gave it a darn good try,” Davis said. “That’s by far the best we’ve played them.”
With the runner up finishes, Pleasant Home has to travel to play Brantley in the South Sub-Regional. The girls play on Thursday, while the boys play Friday. Tip off for both games is set for 7 p.m.
