Gridlock – that’s what motorists caused when venturing out as the sun dawned Thursday.
Law enforcement officers were busy throughout the day dealing with overturned vehicles, cars in the ditch, jack-knifed 18-wheelers and an assortment of other traffic issues.
For nearly eight hours, U.S. Hwy. 84 was blocked because at least five “big rigs” couldn’t get enough traction to make it up Deveraux “Debro” Hill. Reports indicate it took assistance from the state National Guard to clear the roadway. Traffic was re-routed from the Conecuh/Covington County lines until the road reopened after 3 p.m.
There were also reports of 15 vehicles stranded along Rabren Road just before lunch. It took a number of law enforcement officials, as well as wrecking crews, to clear the road.
No serious injuries were reported in the numerous accidents.
