Christmas is just around the corner, and with less than a month until Santa’s big night, events in Andalusia, Opp and Florala will give folks a chance to jingling their bells between now and Dec. 25.
In Andalusia, the city will kick off the Yuletide festivities with the annual Tree Lighting event on the town square Thurs., Dec. 5 at 5 p.m., followed by the Christmas parade at 7 p.m.
This year’s tree lighting will feature the First Baptist Church Women’s Ensemble, One Accord, as well as the FBC Irene Hines Hand Bells, soloist Katie King and carolers from various local churches.
The Tree Lighting, sponsored by the Andalusia Tourism and Relocation Committee as a “Music Around Town Event,” will take place at 6:15 p.m.
This year’s Christmas parade is sponsored by the Andalusia Area Chamber of Commerce. The parade route will begin following lineup at Andalusia High School, and will end at the intersection of East 3 Notch and River Falls Streets.
Registration for the parade, and late registration for chamber members, is still open until Mon., Dec. 2 at noon, but carries a $25 registration fee. To register, call 334.222.2030. Those registered may call the same number to get their float number/unit number after 1 p.m. Wed., Dec. 4.
In Opp, the second annual Christmas at the Depot, sponsored by the Downtown Redevelopment Authority, will kick off Fri., Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m., and will feature the city’s official tree lighting ceremony. Event coordinator Tommie Norris said Christmas at the Depot will include cookies, milk and a chance to take pictures with Santa. Christmas at the Depot will also be held from 6 until 8 p.m. Sat., Dec. 7, as well as Fri. and Sat., Dec. 13 and 14.
