Habitat for Humanity ‘right on schedule’

Habitat for Humanity is still hard at work this week on the completion of their fifth home in Covington County.
Chapter President Dale Pancake said the progress is all due to the community’s involvement.
“It’s coming along really well,” Pancake said. “We’ve had a great turnout of volunteers and have basically gotten the house completely dried in. The siding is on, and the roof is on.”
Pancake said volunteer labor has gotten the home to the point that professional electricians and plumbers are working on preparing the house for insulation.
“We’re right on schedule,” he said. “We may need a few (volunteers) to come in for part of the day soon to help staple insulation, but I don’t know yet if we will get to that this weekend or not.”
Pancake said volunteer labor will be needed again soon as the home becomes ready for painting.
“It will be probably about a week and half to two weeks,” he said. “But, we’ll need all of the help anyone can give us then.”
As for now, Pancake said HFH can not thank the community enough for the support they have given the organization in the construction of the three-bedroom, two-bath house that will soon become the home of Shane and Larecia Laney.
“We’re just really, really pleased with the turnout and the support from the community,” he said.
HFH is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization dedicated to building simple, decent, affordable housing in partnership with people in need. To date, the local chapter has constructed four homes – two in Andalusia and one each in Opp and Florala.
To arrive at the current construction site, traveling from Andalusia, take U.S. Hwy. 84 toward Opp. Make a left onto Airport Road. The home is at the intersection of Airport and Oliver Taylor Roads, in the Babbie Community.
