Robbie Lawson is a big boy.
The Pleasant Home sophomore — at 6-foot-7 and 360 pounds — was invited to attend Alabama’s Junior Day today in Tuscaloosa.
Lawson, who plays at left tackle for the Eagles football team, said he, along with PHS coach Cody McCain, will meet Alabama’s coaches and get a dime tour of the university’s football facilities. Additionally, the two will be able to watch the Crimson Tide participate in spring practice and watch film with the players who play in their specific position.
Lawson only had one word to describe how excited he is about today’s adventure.
“Very,” he said.
But the one thing he’s most excited about is the opportunity to let others know that there are quality football players in small schools, too.
“Really, it’s the opportunity to get my foot in the door,” he said. “I just want to give a way for them to see that we are down here, and there’s more good players down there than just me.
“And it’s a good way to get seen,” he said. “That’s what really excites me.”
The rising junior said he hopes he’ll learn the ropes of how to get into the world of college football at the junior day.
“It is for juniors, but they called and asked me to come anyway,” Lawson said.
Lawson had a humble answer as to where he hopes this opportunity will take him in the future.
“I’d love to play for Alabama, but ultimately I just want to play somewhere that’ll help me pay for school,” he said. “As my dad told me the other day, ‘get on the horse and ride it until it dies.'”
Robbie is the son of Donnie and Lougee Lawson of Andalusia.
