For the past 15 years, the Opp community has been searching for answers – answers to what happened to a young girl about to embark on her senior year of high school.
The then-17-year-old Kemberly Ramer was last seen Aug. 15, 1997, around 11 p.m., leaving her boyfriend’s residence in Opp to return home, which was about five minutes away.
Then-police chief Johnny Ray Metcalf told The Star-News then that Ramer was last seen Fri., Aug. 15, 1997, between 11 and 11:45 p.m., and a missing persons report was filed at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
According to Star-News’ archives, Kenneth Ramer said his daughter’s car arrived at their home at approximately midnight.
“We have no clue where she is,” Kenneth Ramer said in 1997. “It was around midnight when she got here. I’ve called everyone – friends, relatives, anybody who could have seen her or might know where she is – no one knows anything.”
The case even garnered attention from then-Gov. Fob James, who put up a $5,000 reward for information relating to Ramer’s disappearance.
The case remains unsolved, despite, numerous tips, leads and searches over the years, including searching a lake, baptism hole, and sinkhole near Ponce de Leon, Fla., all of which yielded nothing.
Opp Police Department Assistant Chief Mike McDonald said they haven’t had any leads to date this year.
“I’m not aware of the FBI getting any either,” he said. “They tend to come through us and we pass them along. “They are few and far between, and you have to determine which ones are credible. Sometimes we get info that we’ve already checked out,” he said. “But we haven’t given up hope. We hope that sometime we will get closure for the friends and family. It’s still a work in progress.”
The case garnered more national attention last March, when it was shown by CNN’s Nancy Grace, which highlighted several other missing children.
Ramer would now be 32 years old. When she was last seen she had brown hair and brown eyes, was 5 feet, 4 inches tall and weighed 130 pounds. She had clear braces on her teeth and had thick eyebrows.
