Big inning lifts Opp

Opp’s 14-to-15-year-old All-Stars scored nine runs in the fifth inning in a 16-4 victory over Kinston on Friday night in the 14-15 Babe Ruth District Tournament at Crum Foshee Field in Andalusia.

The Bobcats trailed 4-1 going into the fifth, where they scored their nine runs on five errors.

Kinston’s four runs came in the first inning, as the Bulldogs took a 4-1 lead. The Bulldogs’ four runs came from the only hits in the game, which was three.

After the marathon fifth, Opp scored six runs to put the game way out of reach of Kinston and the game ended on the mercy rule.

Opp, now 2-0 at the district tournament, will play next at 7 p.m. on Sunday in the winner’s bracket .

Kinston had all of the momentum in the first, knocking four hits in the outfield against an Opp defense that never quit.

Eli Johnson went 3-for-5 with three RBIs to lead Opp. Maverk Ladsen went 2-for-4 and had four RBIs.

Additionally, Opp’s 16 runs came on eight hits, and the Bobcats made only three errors in the field.

In the fifth inning, Opp tied the game on three of Kinston’s errors, and took a 5-4 lead when Johnson scored on an RBI single from Tanner Duffell.

Covington County’s first game against Ariton, which began at about 8, was still in progress when The Star-News went to press Friday night.

This morning, the 13-year-old All-Stars will start their tournament at 9 with Covington County playing Opp, and then Andalusia will face the winner of CC-Opp at 11:30 a.m.
