Opp scored two runs in the top of the first inning, and that’s all the Lady Bobcats needed in their 2-0 area victory over Geneva on Thursday night.
“We played a great game,” OHS coach Jimmy Reeves said.
In the first inning, Opp’s Courtney Chatham — who also was the winning pitcher — drew a two-out walk, and Amy Young came in to be her courtesy runner. Young then stole second and scored on a fly ball that turned into an error in left field.
Beth Anne Spurlin, who reached on the error, scored on an RBI double by Octavia Thompson.
The Lady Panthers threatened Opp several times during the contest. GHS had runners on second and third base with no outs two times.
“We just made some great defensive plays,” Reeves said, noting where the Lady Bobcats “gunned” a runner down on a squeeze play.
Reeves said Thompson and Laiken Free made some great diving plays on defense.
Opp (24-10) finished its area with a 4-2 record.
