SHS looks to get ‘better’ at invitational tourney

Straughn coach John Fussell said there’s only one thing on the agenda for his Tigers as they play host to their invitational tournament today and tomorrow — getting better.
The Tigers will compete against Red Level and Dothan’s Providence Christian Academy in the three-team tournament, which begins at 4 p.m this afternoon with RLS facing PCA.
After the first game, PCA will face SHS and in the night cap, SHS will face RLS at around 8.
“We just want to get better,” Fussell said. “That’s all we want to do.
“We want to make routine plays. We want to cut down on walks.”
SHS enters this tournament with an 8-5 overall record. Some notable wins for the host team include a win over Class 1A’s No. 1 Brantley on Tuesday night, and Class 4A’s No. 5 and rival Andalusia in the Luverne/Brantley tournament last weekend.
“We’ve got some good players,” Fussell said. “They just need some experience. They have a shorter curve than the group that just graduated.
“They (the seniors that graduated last year) had been starting since they were eighth graders,” he said. “This group’s starting as 10th graders.”
Tournament play will begin at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
