BETTY JOAN MORGAN EVANS

Betty Joan Morgan Evans, 76, passed away at the family residence early Friday morning, Jan. 20, 2012.

She was born July 6, 1935 in Enterprise, the daughter of Robin LaFayette and Eudora Brooks Morgan. After graduating from Troy State Teacher’s College, she took her first job as a fifth grade teacher at Florala City School, a position she held some 31 years. She later was elected to the Covington County Board of Education. Betty possessed a genuine love for children, a gift she never lost, and was evident any time children were around, by the way her eyes lit up. Children were just naturally attracted to her. After her retirement, she enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of the bridge clubs in Florala and also in DeFuniak Springs, Fla. She was a member of the Florala Study Club, but her time was most consumed by her grandchildren. Hardly ever did she and Joe miss any sporting events, church programs or any activity in which their five grandchildren were involved, which meant staying on the road between Florala and DeFuniak Springs, Fla., and wherever the events for their grandchildren were taking place.

At a young age, as just a young woman, she chose Florala to be her home, and once she came, she never left until early Friday morning when she moved to Heaven. She and her family are members of the First United Methodist Church.

Among the survivors are her husband, Joe Evans; her son, Joey Evans and wife, Suanne, all of Florala; her daughter, Jill Stevenson and husband, Dr. Chuck Stevenson of DeFuniak Springs, Fla.; and her grandchildren, Robby, Betsy, Emily, Charlie and John.

A time of visitation was held on Sat., Jan. 21, at the Evans Funeral Home. Funeral services were held on Sun., Jan. 22, in Evans Funeral Home with the Rev. Edward Britton officiating. Burial followed in the Evans Family Plot in Greenwood Cemetery.
