Host team, Franklin, La., Othello get wins

Correction: South Alabama has been given its No. 3 seed and will advance to bracket play tomorrow. They will play the No. 2 seed from the American Dicision at 8:30 am.
Update: Andalusia did not earn a right to play in the double elimination bracket starting tomorrow. The host team needs to have a couple teams lose tonight to have a chance to play in the bracket portion of the tournament.
ANDALUSIA — South Alabama got the must-needed win to earn a spot in bracket play today with a 5-3 victory over Alex City in pool play in the 2011 Babe Ruth 12U Softball World Series.
The host team improves to 3-1 in pool play, and will play Othello, Wash. tonight at 5:30, who still remains undefeated after the team from the Pacific Northwest beat Fern Creek, Ky. 2-1 in another early game today.
Franklin, La. got its second win of the tournament, when it beat Mineral Area, Mo. 3-2.
In tonight’s games, Franklin will play Alex City at 5:30 on Field No. 3. Fern Creek will play Mineral Area at 5:30 on Field No. 2.
South Alabama 5, Alex City 3
South Alabama’s Katlynn Schively, Hayden Willis, Taylor McGhee and Abby Walker went 2-for-3 each.
Willis, McGhee and Walker knocked in one run each.
Walker got the win on the mound, with five strike outs in six innings. She allowed one run on five hits.
South Alabama scored one run in the first inning to take an early lead. However, Alex City tied the game up in the third inning.
The host team answered in the fourth inning with three runs, and sealed the win with one run in the fifth inning.
Alex City made things a bit interesting in the top of the sixth inning when it scored two runs.
Alex City’s Jordan Andrews, Libby Heath, Aaliyah Brooks, Tayla Stowers and Jayme Marbury had one hit each.
Franklin, La. 3, Mineral Area, Mo. 2
Franklin scored three runs in the third inning, and held on late to beat Mineral Area.
For Franklin, Brooklyn Mayon, Maggie Johnson, Ashlee Meyerholtz and Sadie Payne had one hit each. Johnson and Payne had an RBI each.
Mineral Area had the early 1-0 lead until Franklin’s three runs in the third inning.
The Thunder from Missouri scored one run in the fifth inning to cut into Franklin’s lead.
Sarah Sonnier struck out nine and allowed one earned run on two hits to get the win for Franklin on the mound.
Mineral Area’s Hannah Hight was 2-for-2 with one RBI, and Emily Eaton was 2-for-3 with two singles.
Othello, Wash. 2, Fern Creek, Ky. 1
Othello tied the game up 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, and scored its game-winning run on a passed ball to beat Fern Creek.
Fern Creek took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, and it’s defense held Othello’s hitters at bay until the sixth inning.
Hadassi Valdez and Kristen Quigley were the only players that got a hit for Othello today.
Jennifer Leonhardt earned the loss for Fern Creek, allowing one earned run on two hits. She struck out six batters.
Quigley got the win, striking out one and allowing no runs on not hits in three innings.
