There’s good news for local fishermen: Lake Armstrong is reopening this Sat., May 21.

The lake has been closed for the past 14 months while the city was completing the construction of SaeHaeSung’s new facility in the industrial park.

“We are pleased to once again offer public fishing to our citizens,” Dwight Mikel, director of the city’s Leisure Services Department, said.

Mikel stressed that the entrance to the lake has moved, and is now located on the east side of the lake. Anyone entering through the old entrance will be ticketed.

The lake will be open year-round, Monday through Sunday, from sun-up to sundown. The costs for fishing passes are:

• Daily passes, $4 per person, or $5 per person with boat

• Annual photo ID pass, individual – $50

• Annual husband and wife pass, $65

• Annual pass, family of four, $75

• Annual pass, family of five or more, $115.

• Annual boat fees are an additional $5 per person.

Ages 5 and under fish free.

Annual passes are available at Johnson Park beginning today, Thurs., May 19, from 8 a.m. until noon and from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. All permits expire on Dec. 31. Passes for the remainder of the 2011 calendar year will be half price.

The lake is subject to all Alabama Game and Fish laws and will be patrolled by Alabama enforcement officers, local police and leisure services staff.

The pavilion at Lake Armstrong and restroom facilities also are available for family reunions and other events.

The price is $40 per day and includes seven permits.
