Straughn’s strong inside presence on offense helped lift the Tigers to a 66-37 win over the Florala Wildcats on Friday night.
After a 37-23 loss to Pleasant Home on Tuesday night, SHS assistant coach Marc Tracy said practices in between the games helped exponentially.
“It really showed tonight,” Tracy said. “Our intensity was way up compared to our first game (against PHS), and we did a good job of executing the game plan.
“This was a good win to help us move forward and build confidence,” he said.
Straughn had a big lead in the first quarter, and Florala tied the game up at 24 points each in the second quarter.
At the end of the first half, the Tigers went on a 10-0 run, and led 34-24.
“I didn’t think we played exceptionally well,” FHS coach Brad Garner said. “I thought Straughn made great strides between their game against Pleasant Home and playing us.”
Garner said Straughn’s “inside game” contributed to his team’s loss.
“We just didn’t do a good job of stopping (Straughn’s inside game),” Garner said. “I thought we played fairly good defense. Their big kids out-ran us in transition. We didn’t take care of the basketball like we needed to.”
In varsity girls action, the Lady Tigers rallied from a double-digit half time deficit and beat the Lady Wildcats 44-39.
The Straughn B-team boys won 38-15.
