Straughn’s girls varsity team shot out to an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter on Tuesday night and never looked back, beating Pleasant Home 53-35.
The Lady Tigers took a 29-18 half time lead, and outscored the Lady Eagles 10-8 in the third quarter, and 14-9 in the fourth.
“I thought we played well for the most part,” SHS girls coach Scott Kinsaul said. “I told the girls after the game that we can’t turn the ball over like we did.”
Kinsaul added that the early lead helped out in the win.
“We got off to a 7-0 lead, and that was a good start, which is what I was hoping for,” he said. “We didn’t do that against Brantley. Pleasant Home has a good basketball team, and they’re going to be a great basketball team in time.”
Straughn’s Jacie Williamson led with 18 points, Anjelica Bonham added eight points and Katy Messick chipped in seven.
Pleasant Home’s Taylor Godwin led the Lady Eagles with eight points, and Brentin Fuller and Raven Woods scored seven points each.
PHS coach Kelley Garner said her team could’ve played better.
“We didn’t show up — period,” Garner said. “We had a lot of turnovers. We basically spotted them 12 points, and we just never could over come it. We’ve got a lot to work on. “It was basically like starting over again because we haven’t played in however long — nearly two weeks,” she said. “We’re going to get busy, working and improving.”
Straughn and Pleasant Home will continue their seasons this week against area schools. The Lady Tigers will play host to the Florala Lady Wildcats on Friday night, and the Lady Eagles will play host to Andalusia tonight.
