Libertyville native Mac McKinney was inducted in the Old Drag Racer’s Reunion Hall of Fame Sat., Sept. 25 in Panama City. Fla.
McKinney, 68, was honored for his drag racing career, which spanned 1964-1978. He is currently involved in nostalgia races in Dale County, Holt, Fla., and other places.
“I would drag race at the Andalusia drag strip, Montgomery, Pensacola, Dothan, Mobile – really all around,” he said.
McKinney said he became fascinated with motors when he worked for Moore Motors, which was a General Motors distributor.
“When I got out of the service, I got involved in drag racing,” he said. “With drag racing, back then you had to work at it.”
McKinney said he is honored to be voted in by his peers.
“I think it was great that I was voted in,” he said. “The main thing I remember was it was fun back then. It was a sport that you worked at.”
