The Opp City Council voted to demolish its first “public nuisance” Monday night.

City Clerk Connie Smith said the city has been dealing with this piece of property for years.

The property, located on Douglas Avenue, was overgrown with weeds and was abated June 21, when the lot was cleared and a dilapidated structure was discovered.

Now, the owner will have 30 days from Monday night’s action to remedy the nuisance or the city will tear down the structure. If that happens, the cost of removing the structure will be assessed with the owner’s property taxes.

The owner is currently being fined $1,254 that will be added to the property taxes for the recent clean up.

This is the latest in a recent crackdown on overgrown properties it is the fourth parcel to be abated in two weeks.
