BILOXI, Miss. (AP) — Authorities are reopening all of Mississippi’s territorial waters in the Gulf of Mexico for all commercial and recreational shrimping and fin-fishing.

The order took effect at 5 p.m. Friday in waters south of the barrier islands, which are about 12 miles off the coastline.

Some shrimping and fishing had been curtailed because of the BP oil spill.

Waters north of the barrier islands were reopened to shrimping and fin-fishing July 30.

All commercial and recreational crab and oyster fishing will remain closed in the affected areas.

The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources says crab and oyster tissue samples were being tested. When tests show the samples are safe for consumption, additional areas will be opened for these fisheries.
