Stadium improvement construction is expected to begin “some time in the next few days,” Opp City Schools Superintendent Michael Smithart said Tuesday.

The board this week accepted the low bid for $426,000 for Channel-Lee Stadium renovations to Catrett Construction, one of nine bidders.

“This bid is right on the budget we had established,” Smithart said.

The city and OCS announced in May that the more than $400K facelift to the stadium was “a go” thanks to $375,000 in interest-free Qualified School Construction Bonds, designed to help fund school construction projects.

The Opp Booster Club is also helping finance the project, and the city will make annual payments on the project.

This joint venture is the first time renovations have been made to the more than 50-year-old stadium. The project includes a new south wall, concession stand, restrooms and press box.

Smithart said he hopes the project will be completed by the middle of football season. Football games will be played at the stadium, and a temporary press box will be brought in.
