The 6-and-under South Alabama All-Stars kicked off the 2010 Alabama State softball tournament on a good note, defeating Covington Count 23-12 Thursday night, and Alexander City 20-19 on Friday.
Here is a break down of what has happened so far in the tournament on the 6-and-under end.
South Alabama 23, Covington County 12
South Alabama scored seven runs each in the third and fourth innings Thursday night to get the first win of their tournament.
In the first inning, South Alabama scored six runs, and added three runs in the second inning in the win.
Covington County scored three runs in the first inning, one run in the second inning, two runs in the third inning and six runs in the fourth inning.
Leading scorers for South Alabama were Emma Capps, Amanda Majors and Erin Riley with four runs each.
Greycen Worley scored three runs; Emma Eckenrod and Kinsey Gunter scored two runs each; and Madison O’Connor, Maggie Furr, Catherine Pettie and Katelynn Carter scored one run each for South Alabama.
For Covington County, Emma Henley, Alyssa Stewart, Layla Watson, Callie Carter and Brianna Knoll scored two runs each; and Lexi Straughn and Kira Moore scored one run each.
South Alabama 20, Alexander City 19
South Alabama scored four runs in the first inning, one run in the second inning, three runs in the third inning, five runs in the fourth inning, two runs in the fifth inning and five runs in the sixth inning.
For Alexander City, one run was scored in the first inning, three runs were scored in the third inning, eight runs were scored in the fourth inning and seven runs were scored in the fifth inning.
Leading scorers for South Alabama were Majors with three runs; Capps, Worley, Riley, O’Connor, Abigail Lee and Eckenrod with two runs; and Furr, Kaliyah Whitaker, Pettie, Carter and Gunter with one run.
For Alexander City, B. Bowden, K. Lindsey and T. Harris scored three runs each; T. Roberts, K. Henderson and M. Baker scored two runs each; and A. Corley, S. Latham, K. Businelle and R. Cattrett scored one run each.
In tournament action today, Covington County and Alexander City will play at 8:30 a.m. to start the loser’s bracket section of the tournament.
South Alabama will play the winner of the CC-Alex City game at 4 p.m. for the championship.
