UPDATE: Straughn will not be participating in the 7-on-7 football tournament at Pleasant Home next Tuesday night.

Zion Chapel will be the fourth team in the tournament.

Football fanatics will get an early taste of their beloved sport Tues., June 29 when Pleasant Home will host a 7-on-7 tournament at 6:30 p.m. at PHS stadium.

The tournament will have four teams competing. As of Thursday, the schools that will participate in the tournament are Andalusia High School, Red Level High School and Zion Chapel.

There will be a running clock, and teams will play on marked 40-yard fields. Each team has a certain number of downs to reach a first down, and a team has four chances to make a touchdown from 10 yards out.

“It’ll be something a lot of people in the county will be interested in,” Pleasant Home football coach Robert Bradford said.

Bradford said that Opp and Florala might play in the tournament, as well.

Typical 7-on-7 tournaments take place in July, but Bradford said the school is holding this tournament early to get the “kids excited about playing.”

“It allows you to kind of see on your team who’s going to compete, who’s not and who’s going to make the big plays,” he said. “As a coaching staff, we’ll have the chance to go over it, and critique and figure out problems we need to fix now instead of waiting until the end of July.”

Admission is free, and concessions will be available for purchase.

“It might not be the prettiest 7-on-7 you’ll see, but it might be the most productive,” Bradford said. “The biggest thing is getting everybody together and competing and having a good time.”
