The Luverne Tigers used a strong defense and a sputtering offense to defeat the Reeltown Rebels Friday night 14-6.
The Tigers gained 200 yards on the ground and 21 through the air on their only reception of the night.
The leading rusher was Narvais Cole with 126 yards on 20 carries, while Chad Free was 1-of-9 for 21 yards with one picked off.
The Tigers started the scoring on their first possession as they drove 57 yards in six plays. The drive started with a 7-yard gain by Narvais Cole off left guard, then a 9-yard gain by Cole though a large hole opened by the Tiger line. On first down, Chad Free circled right end for six yards, then on second down, Free dropped back and hit Romethius Harris with a pass that covered 21 yards down to the Rebel 14-yard-line. Cole scored on a second down run from 10 yards out.
Allan Foster split the uprights and with 7:37 left in the first quarter, the Tigers had a seven-point lead.
The rest of the first half was a defense struggle with neither team being able to mount any type of scoring drive.
The Rebels started the second half deep in their territory at their 4-yard line. The Rebels were unable to mount any offense and after losing back to their three, were forced to punt. The punt was good for 57 yards and the Tigers took over on their 45-yard line. The Tigers picked up one first down on a Cole run before the Rebel defense stiffened and forced a Chase Free punt. Free's punt covered 37 yards and the Rebels took over on their 39-yard line. The Tiger defense would not allow any gains by the Rebel runners and after three plays netted minus 11 yards. The Rebels were forced to punt the ball back to the Tigers. The Tigers took over on the Rebel 25-yard line for their next possession.
The Tigers were finally able to find some offense as they mounted an eight-play 55-yard drive for a safety td late in the third quarter.
The drive started with a nine-yard run by Cole then a 12-yard run by Lamar Gibson. Then the rest of the yardage was covered by Cole, and the touchdown came on a two-yard run by Cole over left tackle.
Allan Foster again split the uprights to up the Tiger lead to 14 points at 14 to 0, with 1:06 left in the third quarter. The lone Rebel score came on a one-yard run with 29 seconds left in the game, with a final score of 14-6.
The Tigers are home Friday night as they host the Red Level Tigers. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
