Greenville football coach Mike Williams is on the hunt.
Being an avid outdoorsman, Williams would like to spend this winter in the woods looking for that trophy buck. But he's hunting for a Week 10 opponent for the 2006 football season right now.
A scheduling mistake has Williams looking for a new opponent which was originally scheduled to be with Class 4A Hillcrest-Evergreen in Week 5 of the season.
“We hit snag with that date and could not play each other, so we've moved Monroe County up and are now looking for someone to play there,” Williams said.
Williams did say that he is open to playing Hillcrest in a spring game.
“We're talking about that right now,” he said.
Coaches of Region 2, Class 5A met on Wednesday to schedule region games. The Tigers will have home dates in 2006 with Eufaula, Charles Henderson as well as region newcomer Valley.
The Tigers will travel to Bookter T. Washington, Rehobeth, Tallassee and Carroll-Ozark next season.
Williams said that he was indifferent about the schedule so far in regards to when and where the Tigers will play next season.
“You play one game at a time, so I don't look down the schedule to find any advantage or disadvantage,” he said. “We probably have a favorable schedule. Š And we have that stretch where we have three games at home in a row.”
As far as looking for a Week 10 opponent, Williams said that that since it would have to be a travel game, that he would like to limit his travel.
“It doesn't matter at this point,” he said. “We're just looking for someone to play us.”
Williams also is looking to open the season against county rival Georgiana on a Thursday night (Aug. 31) instead of a Friday night. A date has not been agreed upon by both coaches, but he said that he has been in talks with Panthers coach Greg Ennis.
“It would mean a tremendous gate because we would be the only game in town,” Williams said. “I think (Ennis) would do that, and we would do the same for them the next year.”
Williams also said that he would like to face his Week 10 opponent on a Thursday in order to give more time for either school to prepare for a playoff run, should either qualify.
