Regional tournament heats up

The 2003 Babe Ruth Southeast Regional Tournament featured plenty of good baseball this weekend. The action on the diamond continued Monday as the "Wow!" plays begin to mount.
Action continues today at Crum Foshee Field on the campus of LBW Community College beginning at 4 p.m. when Eastern North Carolina plays Tennessee. Florida is slated to face South Carolina in a critical game at 7 p.m.
SATURDAY
Florida 6, Western North Carolina 2
A shaky start did not seem to bother the Florida squad when WNC pounced on starting pitcher Jarrett Maloy on the top of the first inning Saturday morning.
Maloy seemed to get stronger as the game progressed and got the win.
Drew Schwartz reached base with one out when he was hit by a pitch and came around to score.
Florida answered with two runs in the bottom of the first. Sloan Willis started the rally when he was hit by a pitch. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jake Shouppe. Michael Bane followed Shouppe and reached on a walk. John Rickenbacker followed with an RBI-single. Willis and Bane scored in the inning for a 2-1 lead.
Shouppe added a run to the Florida lead in the bottom of the second when he reached on a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Bane's RBI double.
Jimmey Orban reached on a lead-off single in the top of the third for WNC and came around to score. His run cut Florida's lead to 3-2.
Gabe Peters reached on a lead-off double in the bottom of the third and scored on Chris Henker's single to give Florida a 4-2 lead.
Florida plated two more runs in the bottom of the fourth when Bane and Peters scored for a 6-2 lead.
Maloy settled into his grove and went the distance to get the win. He gave up one more run in the fifth when Orban scored his second run of the game for WNC, but it was not enough.
Maloy pitched a complete game for the win allowing three runs on 10 hits and no walks. He struck out five, including the last batter of the game.
Valley 10, Opp 0
Ten runs in five innings gave the Alabama State Champions from valley a 10-0 win against Opp on Saturday.
Chase Earl, Cody Coker and Kevin Miller each scored in the bottom of the first inning for an early lead.
Reiko Stephens added a run in the second for a 4-0 advantage.
Valley pounded the ball in the third scoring five runs. Miller, Justin Johnson, Pat Lindsey, Stephens and Steven Bishop each scored. Lindsey had a triple in the inning.
Miller scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning after reaching on a single.
Chase Earl was the winning pitcher. He started the game and went three innings before giving way to Lindsey. Earl allowed no runs on no hits and one walk. He struck out six, two in each inning. Lindsey allowed Opp's only hit in the top of the fifth inning when George Patterson reached on a single. He waled two and struck out two in the win.
Georgia 9, Virginia 0
North Columbus' finest scored seven runs in the top of the first inning against Virginia en route to a 9-0 win on Saturday.
Alan Taylor, Merit Hicks, Todd Kraemer, Taylor Prichett, Jonathan Hutto, Trent Bowens and Kyle Maley each scored in the inning on five hits. Trey Manz had two hits in the inning, including a big double in his second at-bat.
The score remained 7-0 until the sixth when Taylor scored his second run of the game to give Georgia an 8-0 lead. Zack Campbell added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as Georgia won 9-0.
Taylor Prichett was the winning pitcher. He gave up two hits and no runs in four inning of work. He did not record a strikeout and walked three. Merit Hicks pitched the final three innings.
East North Carolina 10, Andalusia 4
A close game turned into a loss for Andalusia as the ENC team scored four runs in the final four innings, including three in the fourth, for a 10-4 win on Saturday.
Brad Piland, Josh Ashton and Ryan Graepel each scored in the top of the first inning for ENC without getting a hit.
Andalusia managed to answer with two runs in the bottom of the frame as Alex Taylor and Curtis Johnson rounded the bases. Michael Riley had the only hit of the inning with a single.
Three more runs came home in the top of the third for ENC when Ashton, Graepel and Josh Aldridge each scored for a 6-2 lead.
Alex Taylor and Cory Smith scored in the bottom of the inning for Andalusia to cut ENC's lead to 6-4.
Three more runs in the top of the fourth gave ENC a 9-4 lead. Josh Maclaga, Ashton and Graepel each scored.
Ross Warren added an extra run in the fifth as ENC won by a final of 10-4.
Andrew Pair was the winning pitcher allowing four runs in five innings on four hits and three walks. He struck out three. Aldridge pitched the final two innings and did not allow a hit or a run. He walked one and struck out one.
SUNDAY
Virginia 7, Tennessee 3
Games began Sunday morning with Virginia improving to 2-1 in pool play with a 7-3 victory against the Franklin County, Tennessee squad.
The Falls Church/Annandale team from Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning to break a scoreless tie. Shane Mills reached via an error with one out. Tony Collins followed him with a single. Tyler Wolverton got under a pitch and flew out for the second out, but Jim Dickerson kept the rally going with an RBI-single. The Franklin County squad got out of the inning without giving up any more runs.
Virginia went on top 3-0 in the top of the third when Ross Taranto and Edward Soloman reached on back-to-back singles and came around to score. Blair Delean also had a single in the inning.
Franklin County pitcher Jonathan Partin helped his own cause when he scored in the top of the third to make the score 3-1. He reached on a lead-off double and scored later in the inning on a passed ball.
Virginia added two more runs in the fourth when Dickerson and Taranto scored.
The score remained 4-1 until the sixth inning when Tennessee got a run from Jimmy Cole. He reached on a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, went to third on a balk and scored on Glen Sholey's single.
Taranto scored his third run of the game in the top of the seventh for Virginia for a 6-2 lead. Kevin Clinton reached on a single and also scored for a 7-2 advantage. Shane Mills had a single in the inning.
Tennessee added one run in the bottom of the seventh when Partin reached on a walk and came around to score his second run of the game. Cole also had a hit in the inning and Bradley Caldwell reached on an error.
Taranto, however, finished up a complete game to get the win. He allowed three run in seven innings on five hits and three walks. He struck out eight, including three in the fourth inning.
Partin pitched a complete game for Tennessee.
Georgia 10, Andalusia 0
Georgia needed five innings to defeated the host Andalusia squad 10-0 on Sunday with Zack Campbell pitching a complete game shutout. He allowed three hits and struck out three.
Campbell and Jonathan Hutto scored in the bottom of the second for a 2-0 lead.
Georgia opened its lead in the fourth with five runs for a 7-0 advantage when Campbell, Todd Kraemer, Justin Webster, Trent Bowens and David Floyd each scored. Trey Manz and Merit Hicks had key hits in the inning.
Georgia added three more runs in the top of the fifth when Campbell, Kyle Maley and Taylor Pritchett each scored.
Josh Johnson and William Alverson pitched for Andalusia.
West North Carolina 5, Alabama 4
Sunday night's games were as exciting as the fireworks at the opening ceremonies.
West North Carolina started the excitement with a come-from-behind 5-4 victory against Alabama.
Drew Schwartz gave WNC a 1-0 in the top of the first inning.
Alabama tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second when T.J. Yates scored.
Alabama took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Chase Earl and Stephen Bishop each scored. Kevin Miller provided a key hit in the inning.
The score was 3-2 after Bryant Gaines belted a solo home run for WNC in the top of the fifth inning.
Earl scored his second run of the game for Alabama in the bottom of the sixth when he reached on a single, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Bishop's RBI-single. His run gave Alabama a 4-2 lead.
Three runs in the top of the seventh gave WNC a 5-4 edge. Scott Summey started the rally with a lead-off single and came around to score. Schwartz reached on a walk and scored. Scott Estes also scored after a single.
Brandon Harper went to the mound for WNC in the bottom of the seventh and got the save thanks to good defense. A 4-6-3 double play after Justin Johnson reached on a single to lead off the inning helped him get the save. He got the final out on a ground out to second.
Gaines was the winning pitcher for WNC.
Opp 6, South Carolina 5
Sunday's finale ended with a defensive gem in the top of the seventh inning by Opp left fielder Chandler McColloch and third baseman Hunter Langford to secure a 6-5 victory.
McColloch fielded Daniel Gardner's single and threw toward home to try and cut down a runner. Langford knew the run was already in and cutoff the throw a few feet from the third base bag and applied the tag to Zack Addis for the third and final out.
The play ended a late South Carolina rally and secured a win for Opp.
The game began with Opp taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Rhett Barnes reached on a single. He then stole second and third. Barnes scored later in the inning.
Opp added five more runs in the second inning when Andrew Weaver, Jeremy Coon, Steven Hartzog, Ben Messick and Barnes scored.
Opp remained on top 6-0 until the fifth inning when South Carolina scored two runs. Rusty Price and Justin Sarratt each scored in the fifth to cut Opp's lead to 5-2.
South Carolina got another run in the sixth when Brice Smiley rounded the bases after reaching on a walk. Price and Sarratt had singles in the inning for South Carolina.
The score was 6-3 going into the seventh inning and South Carolina began a rally.
Brett Irvin reached on a lead-off double and scored when Stephen Kaemmerlen followed him with an RBI-single. Holden Poole then flied out to right for the first out of the inning. Addis followed him and drew a walk to put runners on first and second.
The next South Carolina batter struck out for the second out of the inning.
South Carolina was down to its last out when Gardner dug in at the plate. He came up with an RBI-single on a 3-2 offering to score Kaemmerlen, but Langford cutoff McColloch's throw and tagged out Addis to end the game for a 6-5 Opp win.
Coon was the winning pitcher with Jason Cotton getting the save.
MONDAY
Alabama 4, Florida 2
The excitement continued right where it left off on Monday morning with the Alabama State Champs from valley using a late rally to erase a 2-0 deficit.
Valley scored four runs in the final four innings for a 4-2 win after falling behind the Florida State Champs from Tallahassee 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning.
Cody Walden and Jarrett Maloy scored in the third inning for Florida. Sloan Willis and Jake Shouppe had RBIs in the inning.
Valley answered with one run in the top of the fourth when Kevin Miller reached on a single and came around to score. T.J. Yates and Patrick Lindsey also had singles in the inning.
Valley took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning when Justin Johnson and Yates scored.
Logan Mezizk added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as Valley held on for the win.
Yates was the winning pitcher allowing two runs in 6 2/3 innings on seven hits and four walks. He struck out three. Chase Earl got the save.
South Carolina 6, Western North Carolina 2
The battle of the Carolinas began with South Carolina building a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning en route to a 6-2 win Monday.
Holden Poole, Shane Mills, Justin Sarratt and Brock White each scored in the inning for South Carolina.
Mills and White scored again in the fourth inning for a 6-0 advantage.
Brandon Harper and Trevor Thompson scored in the top of the sixth inning for WNC.
Sarratt was the winning pitcher allowing two runs on two hits and three walks in seven innings of work. He struck seven in the game.
Virginia 5, Eastern North Carolina 2
Virginia took a lead early Monday with Ross Taranto and Kevin Clinton scoring in the top of the first inning for a 2-0 edge.
Robert Lamas added to the lead in the third.
Lamas scored again in the fourth inning along with Shane Mills for a 5-0 lead.
Ryan Graepel got WNC on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth to trim Virginia's lead to 5-1.
Ross Warren rounded the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning for ENC to make it 5-2, but Virginia held on for a 5-2 win.
Joe Infante was the winning pitcher allowing two runs on five hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings of work.
Georgia 14, Tennessee 3
The final game of the night was a win for the Georgia State Champs from North Columbus. Georgia used a five-run first inning to take a big lead against Tennessee and then won 14-3 in five innings to finish undefeated in pool play.
Trey Manz, Alan Taylor, Merit Hicks, Alex Fuller and Todd Kraemer scored in the first for Georgia.
Tennessee got one run in the bottom of the first when Jimmy Cole scored.
Georgia added three runs in the third for an 8-1 lead when Jonathan Hutto, Trent Bowens and Zach Campbell scored.
Hutto, however, was not finished. He came up big again in the fourth inning when he followed a walk by Kyle Maley with a two-run home run. The round-tripper gave Georgia a 10-1 lead.
Tennessee answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth when Timmy Sons and Greg Jones scored.
In the top of the fifth, Georgia scored four more runs to take a 14-3 lead. Hicks, Fuller, David Floyd and Kraemer each scored a run for Georgia in the fifth.
Hutto was more than just a source of offense for Georgia against tennessee. He also was the winning pitcher allowing one run on one hit and one walk. He struck out three.
