Sorry, if you felt that addressing your particular comment by name was juvenile. I was always taught to address the person with whom I am speaking. On the other hand I also felt that as a parent of a band member it needed to be addressed. You asked a question and I answered it to the best of my knowledge, and yes, I did mention that it was off subject but so were alot of things earlier in the posts. So for the record let me say that it is in my OPINION .. Band is a physical activity... more so than PE.

I know this is straying from the original letter about children in cold classrooms but Mom3 I would like you to know I am addressing your statement:
"BAND is PE, how do you figure that, all the other kids have to run laps and do exercises."
Well I figure that this way, you are not well informed on the activities of band, as a band parent I know my child gets a lot of physical activity you may not be seeing. My child stays after school for marching practice, and since you really don't know what band students go through maybe you need to participate ONE day and see what it is like to march for 2 hours a day sometimes 3 (way more than the 50 min to 1 hour the PE students are doing) and carry an instrument heaven forbid play it at the same time while going forward, backwards, and side to side (running laps when they mess up). Wait don't forget the 2-3 weeks in the summer of 8-5 band camp in the middle of the heat to perfect a halftime show that they MARCH in, after playing in the stands for 2 quarters of a football game every Friday night from September through whenever the season is over (depending on if we make playoffs). Don't let me forget band competitions every weekend in October after playing at an away game somewhere in Mobile then having to get up and travel by school buses to where ever the competition is and stay all day and get home sometime around midnight.
So I am sorry you feel these kids are not getting enough exercise what more do you want them to do?? Play a sport? Do one more hour of physical activity? Geez this has long been a misconception with a lot of parents that in band you just sit on your butt and magically a halftime show comes about. That music just suddenly appears from out of nowhere, and to get 70-80 kids in tune and playing together is a piece of cake. Oh wait that is not physical activity either is it?
I on the other hand have seen from a band parents point of view as I go everywhere with the band and I am there every night when they perform, so yes I see it differently. I see when they are sunburned in the summer, and have sprained ankles from tripping while marching backwards, (don't forget the chap stick for the lips since they are pressed to a piece of brass for hours on end) but they get back in there and still march. It is all worth it when they make all 1's in competition, the smile on their faces are priceless to a parent.
Mom3, I am sorry you don't understand what it takes to be a child in band. It is something much deeper than 1 hour of running laps and doing "exercises" it is PRIDE and self-esteem building for that child as well, because we all know not all kids are great at SPORTS but this is an outlet for exercise and a way for every child to participate in a school activity. So please before you make the statement again observe and participate in the band organization just to see what they really do.

True they all tested positive for Type A flu, I don't know if they had a flu shot or not, dosen't really matter now. But the fact is they came in contact with it somewere, and probably went to school and while there they possibly may have passed it around. Now the colder temps may be supressing the spread of the flu or it may not we don't know. The fact of the story is be on the lookout, because the FLU is in our neighborhood. Seek medical treatment and don't send your children to school if you think they have the flu, that is what spreads it around. If you have taken the flu vaccination great, does it mean you will not get the flu NO. Use common sense and help prevent the spread of the FLU.

On Flu hits county

I have 2 children in the county school system. My children have been complaining of the COLD classrooms for sometime. For several weeks one or both of them have been suffering from HEAD colds, sinus issues, severe coughs and headaches. So I medicate as needed, BUT due to the rules and regulations unless you have a prescription they can not be medicated at school. I do not have a problem with this policy, being a medical professional myself, I understand the liability issue that goes along with giving children medication without a prescription. BUT in "MY OPINION" the cold classrooms contribute to the increased sickness. Yes the colder temps can decrease the spread of "germs" but going from warm homes to cold classrooms contributes as well. I send my children to school to get a quality education.... I don't feel as though wearing 2 shirts a hoodie and a jacket, should be necessary. I know for a fact the statement emilyak09 made about the offices being warmer is true. It might have to do with the electric heater that was pulgged into the outlet close to the desk. Which I did notice when I was there to pick up my sick child. As far as the rasing children to not "WHINE" as much well that is not an issue in my home, I have had my children have the nurse call me and ask me to come and bring them some medication so they could stay at school, because they are afraid they are going to miss something they can't make up. Children get sick and so do adults but we should not be contributing to the issue and with flu season getting on the upswing I am afraid that many of the children who have been having the colds and coughs will have depressed immune systems and will be more susceptible and spend even more days out of school and behind in their school work, but hey at least mine will be warm at HOME trying to get well.. AGAIN this is just my OPINION.
