Area champions
Red Level beats Mobile Christian to claim title
Published Monday, February 8, 2010
Red Level’s James Feagin finished with a double-double Monday night to help lift his team over Mobile Christian 56-47 in the Class 2A, Area 1 championship at Red Level.
Feagin had a game-high 21 points, 17 rebounds and four blocks.
“I’m just thankful that we won tonight,” Red Level coach Fred Kelley said. “We were fortunate to be the area champions. That’s just humbling to see with losing all the seniors from last year.”
The Tigers (16-11) came back from a four-point deficit after the first quarter to tie the game up 23-23 at halftime.
“We were just fortunate to be tied at halftime,” Kelley said about the first half. “Both teams played hard and I hate to see somebody lose. We are thankful that the boys played hard.
“We got in the double bonus and made some free throws,” he said. “Our defense has been good for us all year long. We kept telling them that every possession is huge.”
The Tigers outscored Mobile Christian 13-12 in the third to take a one-point, 36-35 going into the fourth quarter.
O.J. McGhee also had a good night for Red Level with 12 points. Troy Nolen added 10 that included 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the last four minutes of the contest.
Taylor Hardy led Mobile Christian with 15 points and Cameron Colgazier added 12.
Red Level will host Millry Friday night in the Class 2A, Area 1 South Sub-Regional tournament at 7.
Kelley said he appreciated the good turnout Monday night.
“It was a huge turnout from our students section,” Kelley said. “I’m just proud of the student body. We hope it’s going to be a good thing for every body.”
