Florala boys, girls lose 1st game of season Monday in Samson

Florala coach Brad Garner said he thought his team played a good game, despite a 70-57 loss to Samson on Monday night.
“I thought we played pretty well for the first game of the season,” Garner said. “There were a lot of mistakes, but they were expected. It was just an early season game.”
Florala’s Zac Fleming led in scoring with 14 points; Colt Jackson had 12 points; and Hunter Oswald had 10 points.
Garner said a big reason the Wildcats lost was due to Samson’s transition game.
“Samson was real athletic and they got a lot of easy buckets in transition — not necessarily because we weren’t hustling,” he said. “We didn’t get the fast break stopped. We struggled with that.
“All in all, I thought we played well and hard and gave good effort and tried to do the things we worked on at practice,” he said. “I was not disappointed in how we lost. I definitely think we have something to work on.”
Garner said his team would continue to improve on its defense.
“We’ve got to get better defensively from what I saw (Monday night),” Garner said. “We had three people in double figures. I think we’re still finding our shooting touch. It goes back to nine days of practice and to fundamentals.”
Florala will host Goshen on Friday night. Tip off is at 4:30 p.m. with the B-team.
In other action Monday night, the Lady Wildcats lost, 64-39, and the B-team lost, 34-24.
Florala’s Justina Clissold led the Lady Wildcats with 10 points and Brooke Hammonds had nine.
