Bubba becomes (more) famous
Local cop featured in Australian video
Published Friday, November 13, 2009
Meet Sgt. Charles Bailey — or “Bubba” as he’s known around town — the Andalusia Police Department officer and new local celebrity who recently made his acting debut in a video with the Australian comedy duo “Hamish & Andy.”
It was all caught on tape and is now available to millions of viewers on YouTube. Viewers can either search for “Andalusia Hamish and Andy” or type the URL www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlFODGnrLsQ into their web browser.
Throughout the year, Hamish Blake and Andy Lee, whose adventures are featured both on the radio and on television across Australia and New Zealand, have traveled across the United States in what they call a “Caravan of Courage” trip. During that trip, they passed through states across the nation — including Alabama, where they visited Andalusia.
Their tour guide was Bubba, the 31-year-department veteran recruited by his peers to give the “two mates” (that’s Australian for “friends”) an up-close view of law enforcement, Alabama style — all with departmental approval, of course.
It’s something to watch when Bubba describes Andy, as the subject of a staged city-wide manhunt, “wearing pj’s and running like a girl.”
“They probably spent an hour or so filming it,” Bubba said. “We tried to kill two birds with one stone — get some nice shots of Andalusia and ‘rehabilitate that boy.’ He ran like a girl.”
Hamish, or “Lt. Ham” as dubbed by Bubba, rode shotgun in the patrol car and provided narration of the “chase,” which had Andy making his way through the center of town.
“We chased that boy from the front entrance of the P.D. to the square,” Bubba said. “When he took a break for a hot dog, we caught him at the corner of the courthouse.”
That’s when Andy was “taken down” and “cuffed,” Bubba said. If one pays close enough attention to the video, it’s easy to spot the “rehabilitation” process of the arrest.
“There was nothing brutal about it,” Bubba said. “I just made sure all my 280 pounds wasn’t on his chest. He was a little disturbed and worried and did bump his head when he didn’t get his way — maybe even a couple of times, but there was no police brutality.”
Before anyone gets upset at the mention of “brutality,” Bubba is quick to mention the entire event was staged for “a good laugh.” However, he won’t reveal just how much of his performance was true acting.
“Lots of people have asked about that,” he said. “They always say, ‘Never show your ace card, keep ‘em guessing,’ and that’s what I’m going to do.
“We had a great time,” he said. “They are excellent young men — very humorous. I’ve always liked comedy and it made for an interesting time. I’ve spoken Southern English all my life, so it was nice to learn a little southern Australian. But when they started talking about ‘mates’ I got kind of skittish. I am a married man, after all.
“And now that this thing has come out, well my wife is upset,” he said. “She said she now knows I have more energy than I have been portraying. That boy (Andy) — he was tall and he was fast, but I caught him. I had to drive in my patrol car to do it, but I got him.”
There is also another positive side to Bubba’s web debut — exposure. He said one out of every five Australians either listens to or watches the Hamish & Andy show, and of course countless millions can now view the clip on YouTube.
“Me and Robin Williams is what I’m hoping,” he said. “I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to match wits with him. Maybe it will work out.”

The only part that disturbed me was when he pointed out the bent side of his car from people bumping there head. People don't realize some of these things actually happen and it is not an accident. In fact some of the people arrested are already in handcuffs. I have respect for the law enforcement that do there jobs professionally. And of course I realize one bad apple can taint the whole barrel. These bad apples should go work in Montgomery, Mobile, Atlanta, D.C. and I could go on and on, These bad apples know who they are and they actually laugh about these situations. Some of them are sadistic as far as I am concerned. But as my grandmother always said every dog has his day

When I saw this clip about "Bubba" ,Hamish & Andy- I laughed so hard I ALMOST CRIED. I watched it 3 times ,and laughed at "Bubba's" expressions and comments each time as if it was the first time seen. I do agree , "Bubba" and Robin Williams would make a perfect pair in a comedy movie--- I would pay to see that one. Hope a copy of this clip can land in the right hands, maybe one day we will see them . Jackie Gleason was not any more funny than our own "Bubba". ---- No, I don't know officer Bailey personally.

Very Well Done! !Good Promo for Andalusia. Captain Charles (Chuck) Bailey did more good exposure for Andalusia in 2 min. than the Chamber of Commerce has in 40 years! I really enjoyed with all my heart!

Bubba takes his job very seriously and is good at what he does. Its a very stressful and sometimes heartbreaking job and it never hurts to look on the lighter side once in a while......its human nature.....some people wouldn't know a bad apple if it was served up on a platter for them! As my grandmother always said, "You reap what you sow". "Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do, whatcha gonna do when they come for you". (And hey, I KNOW Bubba!)

LMAO Way to go Bubba! I am proud of him and yes I do know him and yes their jobs are sometimes a lot more sadder than what you think and sometimes they can be tested by the best of the crooks out there and they know who they are... and my grandmother use to say the same things every dog has their day, but also said you reap what you sow as I am sure that a lot of other grandmothers has said the same. But Bubba is a good man and he is well respected. Thank you Hamish and Andy for making Bubba famous who knows some day their will be a Bubba and Robin Williams..........

I just want to add that Bubba told me just this past monday that he doesn't work at night any more and sure did missed HIS kids ,,now what does that tell me? He takes up time with teen agers ,possibly keeps them out of trouble .He knew my grandkids. AND guess what he was doing Monday? He helped clean an old abandon cemetery that was in the woods,That tells me more about this man .

Very good acting job Bubba. You reminded me of Buddy Hackett, one of my favorite comedians of yesteryear. Very funny expressions and good timing delivery with the comments they had you say and some even better lines of your own. Also good use of their Australian accent. You well represented that a Police Officer can be a nice and happy person while still getting the job done.

Hey Y'all! I got Bubba's autograph today on my copy of today's paper, and even got a lesson in his "5 dialects of Southern English!" (I just wonder how many of those he made up, LOL.)
I love Bubba and all that he and the other law enforcement officials do for Andalusia!

Bubba is one heck of a cool cat, oopps i mean cop.I do believe some of the ugly comments here are from people that are just a little bit jealous of Bubbas fame. You go Bubba~ and ignore any rude comments because most people know what a great guy you are and the video is sooooo funny! :)

First, I would like to say Chuck is a nice guy, always has been. I have no problems with him. He is willing to help when you ask him.
I do have a problem with the city allowing an officer and the taxpayer's vehicle to be used in this stunt. Had something happened to one of the real idiots that had no business in the car we would have been reading a different story.
Chuck, you were funny but I just don't think you should have been in on those punks "let's make fun of Alabama" shoot.
Hopefully all of the businesses will see this that are thinking of building here and go the other way. Less people, less crime, less real idiots.

I can say this much. If blue lights are on behind me in Andalusia I am hoping it will be Chuck. He is the fairest police officer on the force. I know I will not be up against lies as to my offense. Not all are as honest as Chuck has been over the years.
Doesn't change the fact that his comedy made the police look as bad as some of them are, not Chuck, though. He is a reasonable man.
dbzfusionfreak, IF Chuck made you scrub, tell us what you did for him to make you do that. I think it would be very interesting. Also, you say you are from Florida. Well, you are one of the real idiots I am talking about our town not wanting or needing.

So the ones in FL are the real idiots that your town does not want? Well, DBZ, I guess you have your reasons for not liking "Bubba"...I also am not fond of many of the LEO that are in Covington County. Their morals are nonexistent and the ethics are leaving alot to be desired! I only go back to Andy when I visit my family, and even then I am ready to get out of there! I had to get away, after living there for 15 years I was ready to go! Southern hospitality is lacking and most of the folks there are two faced back stabbers. Maybe after people see this and see who the good folks are then someone will get those losers that try to call themselves LAW ENFORCEMENT out and get some good people in!

Well, it's about time that you have gotten some well deserved recognition for 25 years of service to the City of Andalusia. I feel honored to have worked with you for four of those years and I've never met a law enforcement officer who had gotten more respect from the public as you have, especially the younger citizens. As far as you being a bad apple, well, Bubba, the only ones who think that must have had the honor of your signature on a citation, huh?! SGT. Bailey, in all honesty in my opinion you are still and have always been an asset to the city, the citizens and the community. I'm very proud of our friendship and I wish you all the best. I am very lucky to have you as a friend and I know there are alot more out there who feel the same way. So, keep up the good work, overlook the few idiots who have a negative opinion and you can bet that I'll attend your retirement party if I live long enough,

madeitoutnvergoinback, let me tell you something. This is our home. Some left, some did come back. I did. It's not because I liked the people I left, it is because it is home.
If you can't defend your home, then what can you defend? There are still more people here I dislike more than like. That will not change. It is still my home.
I have my own piece of privacy away from what I do not like. I am still in familiar territory. Some fond memoreies, some not but it is still familiar and home.
If you don't like it, then don't come back.

SouthernAttitude1: It is not the town that bothers me, it is the people... If the people who like to cause trouble and gossip would grow up then things would be better! I should have been more precise in my wording above, Andalusia is a beautiful place, and I also have some wonderful memories, but I cannot defend a place where the people instead of helping others and doing right they gossip and lie. It is all a popularity contest. Most of the people there mean nothing to me.... my family and the few close friends are why I go back... Home is where you make home...
Crooked police, ones who are asking females for sexual favors, ones who like hitting on females, the front they put up makes ME SICK!!! Defend and Protect.
Andalusia is not the problem, its the people in it.....
I will be back, See ya then!

madeitoutnvergoinback, ah, gotcha. You must be talking about my nosy neighbor! If they don't know it they will make it up. You have a point.
Not all cops are bad. There are some that should not hold a badge. There are many that are doing their best to help their community. Not naming names on either. Both sides know who they are. They also know their fellow officers who are not who they should be. Good and bad anywhere you go. At least I have background on the people here.

Exactly... Not every single person is the same, just like all LEOs are not. I happen to be GREAT friends with quite a few LEOs... There are those like you mentioned who make stuff up if they do not have anything to speak of, then you have the ones the few who care and do what they can....
Anyway I am done with the childish games, I will be back to visit friends and family, and I will not be afraid of the LEOs... You are right, there is a few good ones!!!

How did an article that was supposed to be for laugh's and just good humor get turned into some crap arguing over good cop bad cop. Sure all cities not just this town have them but, unfortunately being in a smaller town we happen to know all the police officers. I personally have had a dealing with Bubba and he happened to be the only one of the officers that happened to get the story on what was actually happening instead of just trying to bust up something that was even going on.

I agree Mbishop. Every article that in any way mentions law enforcement always ends up in a police bashing slugfest. I have an idea that the majority of the posters degrading the police have had an inordinate number of up close and personal encounters with the law. Maybe their gourd came in contact with the door/roof of a police car. Maybe they fell down while cuffed. Maybe they tried to run and were tackled and scraped their knees and elbows and noses. Maybe all this took place when they were approached by a police officer who wanted to ask them why they had their shirt off, stumbling round drunk, cussing and raisin hell, with a crack pipe in their back pocket and a beer bottle in their hand all the while pissing in their pants. I dont know...I'm just sayin...

Yeah I am completely certifiable..... I met your mom in the hospital... She said Hello. I am trying to imagine you with personality but that is hard to do! Anyway, I'll try being nicer if you'll try being smarter .Honestly, I don't know what your problem is but I'm going to bet it's really hard to pronounce.
