Jones announces run for state House
Published Wednesday, November 4, 2009
Tuesday, former Andalusia City Councilman Mike Jones Jr. announced his candidacy for the Alabama House of Representatives, District 92.
Jones, an Andalusia attorney, made the announcement on the Court Square in Andalusia before a gathering of approximately 100 people. He is seeking office on the Republican ticket and will be subject to the June 1, 2010, Republican primary.
Seth Hammett, the current Speaker of the House, has held the seat for the past 33 years.
Jones said, “We need someone who’s able and willing to be in Montgomery just as long as Seth has been. I am able and willing.”
Jones talked about the importance of education and said, “Covington and Escambia Counties cannot compete with the world and grow without more emphasis and resources on education.
“Our children’s classrooms should not be filled with roadblocks like not enough books or computers,” he said. “We must provide adequate resources and good teachers for our children to succeed. To be honest, I believe anybody who wants this job as state representative would be foolish not to support our local schools and our children’s education.”
He said that if elected, he would vote for ethics reform.
“If an elected official knowingly takes money from the people of our state, he should be punished,” he said.
He also said he is a supporter of law enforcement, fire and rescue “and will continue to do so whether I am elected or not.”
Jones closed with his stand on three issues — the Second Amendment, legislation, and health care.
“As a lifetime member of the NRA, I believe the Second Amendment was written for a reason,” he said. “I believe guns and hunting are a part of our heritage, and I will do nothing to infringe on our right to bear arms.
“If elected, I will not vote for any proposed law without first reading and understanding it,” he said.
“And no, I don’t think our government should run our health-care system,” he said.
Jones is a former two-term member of the Andalusia City Council and currently serves as the city’s municipal judge. While on the council, he represented the city of Andalusia on the Southeast Alabama Gas District board, of which he is a former chairman. He has volunteered with the Boy Scouts and youth soccer programs, and has served on the Chamber of Commerce board, the LBWCC Foundation board, the Southeast Alabama Mental Health board, and has volunteered as a member of the sheriff’s posse. He currently chairs the Andalusia Downtown Redevelopment Authority.
He and his wife, Kathy Harper Jones, are the parents of two daughters, Olivia, 11, and Sophia, 5.
He is a graduate of Andalusia High School, LBW State Junior College, Birmingham Southern College, and the University of Alabama School of Law.

All those appointments in a small town where your family owns a large multimillion dollar business is all fine and good, been that way for a 100 years in the South, no problems from me. But this job is about the working people, senior citizens, real people in the real world, real pains of life, this County needs no 'silver spoon' recipients to serve in this job at this critical time in America's future. This is almost a 'depression', he has never even served in the military or been dirty, I say a firm "NO" to this rich mans son, stay City Council and civic clubs!!!!!

It is obvious that this person does not know Mike Jones. So what if his family has money, they are good people too. I am not someone with money but would never begrudge those who do, it has nothing to do with their character. Good luck Mike, I think you would do a great job just like Seth did.

supprtVets - you obviously did not hear Mr. Jones' speech yesterday and just want to start throwing mud. No way do I believe this man was born with a silver spoon. His family has always been a hard-working family. So what if they may be well-off. . . hard work pays off. Just sounds like you are jealous to me. . . .
Mr. Jones is a hard working member of this community who will and can make a difference in Montgomery. He certainly has my vote!

Can't support Jones, he is a lawyer. Tooooooo many lawyers in the state legislature now and the legislative lawyers are the cause of our problems in the state now. Look at our tort system, devised by legislative lawyers to "feather their financial nests" and provide lifetime retirements from law suits. I don't care which lawyer tells you that they support Tort Reform, they have a brotherhood that is so tight, in the end, they will continue the legal nightmare of law suits. Someone else will get my vote, NO MORE LAWYERS IN OUR STATE LEGISLATURE!!!!!!

You are sooooo stupid averagejoe. You won't vote for the one person who may really make a difference just because he's a lawyer!!!!! Get a grip. Mr. Jones is his own man as he has proved over and over. My vote will cancel your out, so there's no need for you to even vote.
If you really care, you will take the time to find out what Mr. Jones platform is. I think if you were to take the time to talk to him you would change your mind. But you know what they say about narrow minds. . . .

I do not know this man nor anything about him, I will look into this matter and others and then make up my mind as we all are to do.
However, I think the commond man should run for all offices and take out the "Attorney" factor.
The Bible saying wo is the Attorney for he is condimed for he is the with holder of the truth.
An Attorney does not care if you are guilty, He only wants to win the case through whatever means nessary.
Remember the old saying; How can you tell when an Attorney is lieing?, When his lips are moving.
Maybe he can also take seths place an President of L.B.W. and take a doubble dip.

This man's platform is just a spring to get to Montgumery and then it will all change. Wake up people and smell the bovine fecal matter and vote in some one that really works for a living.

Mike Jones comes from a good family who have worked hard for what they have. And, Mike has also worked hard for Andalusia when he was on the city council. And, as we saw then, he is not a YES man. I heartily endorse him to replace Seth and will gladly vote and support him.

When asked to expound on his beliefs and thoughts Mr. Jones replied:
"Well, I believe in the soul, the small of a woman's back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days."
I believe in love and hate and all the emotions in between. I believe in Coca-Cola and French fries. I believe in supporting the soldiers, even when I don't believe in the war. I believe players who are on the juice shouldn't be in the hall of fame, I don't know about Allah or Buddha, but I do believe they would want us to get along. I believe a good movie doesn't have to win an Oscar. I believe that reality TV is overrated and that a pitcher's duel is underrated. I believe in the power of a smile.I believe white should'nt be worn after Labor Day. And I believe that the world would be a better place if everyone had to give and receive one sincere hug a day.

You definitely do not know of what you are talking about. If you did than you would know FM Jones, his grandfather, was one of the hardest working men I have ever known and he passed that down to every member of his family. So what they have done well, isn't that the American way. Work your butt of and accomplish something for yourself. Isn't that what Veterans have fought for all these years. Micheal would be a asset to covington and escambia counties.

Yes I knew F.M. Jones, who didn't, I knew him when he sold potatoe chips and his small office was on Dunson Street before Andalusia Distributing became the muti-million dollar corporation it is today, I know all of F.M. sons, and I know little Mike, the attorney. That's why I beleive he needs a little more learning about 'life' in the real world before seeking such an office beholding to so many people, that I do not trust him with. That's a long way from Boy Scouts or City council in a little small south Alabama town. We need, (although we may not get) a more seasoned person in 'real life' that can relate to his constituates and feel their 'pulse'.
The Jones family are to be commended, are good people I do agree, but this job is 'vital' to our community and plays a large impact for OUR future, not just polictical aspirations. He's not ready yet, maybe 10 more years.

Much nicer tone "supportVets" I thank you for that. I look back at a very young Seth Hammet that took this county places and did, all in all a very good job for us. He was in his thirties also. I typically like a more seasoned person in office however Micheal is honest and will have this community at heart. I can truthfully say this.

Thank you Michael for running for this position. We will be behind you. You WILL win this election.

I am delighted that Mike Jones has formally announced his intentions to run for office in the Alabama House of Representatives. Having wealthy or poor parents is no legitimate barometer to determine the worth or value of a person. A persons wealth can not be measured by the number of dollars they have in a bank; their true wealth is measured by the number of people who speak well of them! Fortunately for Mike, I, along with many, speak well of him. I respect him and believe he will do a great job for Covington County as our representative on the state level.

I have known Mike Jones for a long time. He is a good guy. I know he will be glad, just as I am, to learn that a man in his 40's is still considered young.
I went to school with Mike. Yes, his family was wealthy and mine not so much. It never seemed to matter to him or I. We were just friends. Neither of us cared what was on our parents 1040. Mike was a good guy then and still is a good guy. It takes hard work to be successful no matter what line of work a person is in. He has worked hard as his family has before him. That is part of the great reward this country offers and I pray will continue to offer.I think with people like Mike in politics it can continue to be for future generations.
I find it hard to hold a mans success against him. I will always vote for the guy who works hard, supports his family, and is involved with good organizations. I guess what I am aking is when did being successful become a bad thing? Maybe it all goes back to the divisive game of rich against poor that so many weaker politicians try to play because they really do not have answers or the guts to tell some people the truth.
I know he will do a good job if elected. He has a vested interest in this community. He cares about it and is proud to be from this area.
By the way, when did serving in the military become required to hold public office? Jimmy Carter served in the military and look what good it did the country. I am a war veteran and can think of plenty of guys I served with I would not want running an ice machine for me. That is not a knock on veterans just the truth. Remember, I am one of those veterans.
Bottom line is Mike is a good guy. I am not declaring him the winner but it is very good to see quality, caring, honest, and bright "young" people wanting to lead and be involved in politics.

Mike Jones is a wonderful, caring, compassionate, understanding and loyal man. He is the best choice for State Representative. He may be an attorney, but a liar he is not. I am proud to call him a friend. I thank God everyday for placing such a wonderful man in my life. Covington County is lucky to have a man like Mike Jones.

I dont know Mr. Jones. What I am asking for is a written on the record outline of what he would do to fund schools. Something we can look back on after the election and use to as the proverb says "hold his feet to the fire".

Just like several other posters have said, CALL MR. JONES, biscuit. His phone number is listed in the telephone book. Sounds like your afraid to call because you know he will have an answer to your question. If Mike tells you something, you can take it to the bank. You won't have to "hold his feet to the fire". Duh.

biscuit I will ask Micheal just for that or better yet suggest that be a topic for a debate or article. I have known Micheal since well the day he was born and when all the other cousins were getting into mischief Micheal would refrain. We would play at his house or mine and I would get in trouble because even then Micheal would tell the truth. Guess thats one reason he would be great for this position and not some of us.

I have known Mike for several years. His reputation preceeds him. He is honest and has deep feelings for our community. He has proven it time and again through the city council, boy scouts, church, and through his life. What else does he have to prove? Give the man a chance. Ask questions and give him the chance to answer. I think everyone will be well pleased. It's just like a bunch of ignoramouses to down someone they don't even know. And by the way, he's actually in his early 40's.

I have had the pleasure to work closely with Mike the last 16 some-odd years (how many of you have worked that many years with one person?). Never have I met a more caring, compassionate, honest person. Mike is truly a man of intregrity, something which is rare these days. Mike does not make decisions based on emotion, but takes the time to read and research issues. His heart is truly in the right place. He always has an encouraging word, no matter who you are, nor is he judgmental (even if he is an attorney). Just because he is an attorney, don't make the assumption that he is "evil incarnate". Mike does not tolerate lying and will not represent anyone that he knows is lying. I strongly suggest that anyone who does not know Mike get to know him. I have a feeling he will be an important figure in our community for years to come.

An attorney not lying, suing people for profit, charging exorbitant rates to poor mothers for 'custody cases' to get their children back from spouces and other family members in family court, will come home to 'roost', if he's done it, I don't know, but the election will tell the tale. He's been a lawyer about 15 years and somebody loses and somebody wins, in family court, and in lawsuits, take your pick or take your chances which side you were on with Mike Jones and if your a registered voter or you family members are registered voters. If he's done his job, then he's changed some people lives forever in divorce and child custody cases and will not be forgotten, and in any local lawsuits against Covington voters if he's had any to speak of in 12 or 15 years. Everybody don't like lawyers, their like used car salesmen their first 20 years until they learn to mature and 'reason',........without court.
I think it will be real interesting, to see how far the 'money' will go to win the election, and to see just whats really sincere to really help the same people he's been fighting in court all these years to 'obtain' their vote and trust. There's more lower paid, fixed income people in Covington County than the Country Club & Woodland crowd, which way will they vote, ........and what will be the deciding 'point' to get them to 'pull' the lever in the election booth, ....the 'good guy' thing will not do it anymore in these days and times. Lets see who else comes out before we PICK THE WINNER.

Although I have only met Mr. Jones I have family members who have known and dealt with him. His kind assistance to them alone will make me consider him for this office but his platform convinces me he would be a good candidate. Believe me, lawyers are at the bottom of my "respect list" but there is always an odd one in any group. I also like the fact he is young enough to have school-age children in a time that education is such a vitally important issue.

I never heard of Mr Jones but I vote in his district. He certainly seems to be a nice fellow from the posts here. I would be most interested in whether he can get past the ideological box and represent the interest of all of his district. I know some other otherwise nice folks who can never find a way to accommodate different views and end up either being overbearing or obstructionist. Seth was a very practical leader - and we need that pragmatic leadership.

chefjones....in responce to the comparison of Micheal to Seth Hamment on the 'age' issue. I just happen to be from up in that area (as u all know) where Seth was reared and I'd like to share with you. Seth was unique and cannot be duplicated, he had back then advisor's that cannot be paralleled in today' world, just to name a few...CC Chairman Jess Merrill, Marvin Hamment (who brought running water to Covington County, his dad)....Icon "Bud"Johnson, the famous Roscoe Worley, CC Chairman "Bill"Smith and "OldTimers Quartet", Jim & Betty Williams, owners of WAAO, Probate Judges Leland & Bonnie Enzor, longtime Mayor Chalmers Bryant......all of the above from Rose Hill, Alabama.
Seth even worked at our local WAAO radio station for quite a while and played good music and met everyone in the county just like Blaine Wilson's doing now....The entire 117th National Guard also gave their 'full support', and there you go, chefjones, can Micheal match that?

He is the same everytime you see him. He is not deceitful, nor a fake. If you don't know him, please take the time to meet and talk with him before you go spouting off such rude nonsence. I'm sure he will be glad to tell you where he stands on whatever issue you have.

bluecollarguy- You wrote "The entire 117th National Guard also gave their 'full support', ..." This is news to me because I was in the 117th. I do remember him always coming around during election time and at Marvins for cookouts. However, I can tell you for a fact that he did not get the "full support" you testify to.
I do not have anything against Seth. I think he did an okay job. However, I have always had one question about his power and influence at the state level. If he was so good why could he never get a single highway four laned across Covington County? Any manufacturing industry will tell you this is a MAJOR factor in plant location. It ranks right up there with skilled labor force. Just a question that I am sure plenty will have an answer for Seth.

I've been studying about this thing, the opening of the Seat on the House of Represenatives, this is not 'open and shut' between Greg White and Mike Jones, not by far........not by even by a country mile!
The average land owning citizen does not want anyone in Utility management, banking, or law, this is a 'peoples' position. The person should be well groomed and poised, preferably of Methodist origin, but a good strong Babtist might wing through. Be familar with the Andalusia Pilot Club & Luncheon members, Kiwani's Club, Lion's Club, Covington Historical Society, Covington Humane Society, Red Cross, Johnson Park, Halloween on the Square, the Senior Citizens Center,( and visit frequently) not wear a suit and tie everyday to work now, possess and use everday the 'ability' to talk with a man without a job, or a bank president with the same ease, and show them both the same respect, be kind to the elderly and be able to look at 'both' sides of a situation, and look after the underdog just like he's from the wealthiest family in town.
The 'field' is still 'wide open' for this seat, and I encourage YOU the citizen to look around at the next ball game, or event for a 'good cause' and see if you see any potential cantidates. Like Micheal Jackson the entertainer would say, "With Love".

xpectedbetter-I don't know what Michael has done to you personally. I only know that everyone has offended someone at one point in their lives. If not, they do not stand firmly on their beliefs. As far as Michael not treating people fairly - I have known him for over 30 years and have never seen him act like he thinks he's better than anyone else.
The main issue here is that he is the best man for the job of those who are running for it currently. One other candidate completely ran our county in the ground. I think that record speaks for itself.

localconservative: I respect your opinion. And I respect that you think MJ is fair and honest. But as in any and all situations, things happen behind the scenese that you may not be privy to. You can rest assured that Michael has worked really hard to craft the image that you see today. And if you think he wouldn't capitalize on an opportunity to run somebody else into the ground so he can get ahead -- as long as not too many people know about it -- he'll do it.

If he was in the last council with Michael, he needs to go get back under his rock.

Seriously?!? Where do you people work that you can spend this kind of time on the computer? I have heard people go on and on about wanting someone who will stand up for "the hardworking man". Unfortunately, if you have enough time in your day to post umpteen comments on the computer, you are not one of those people. Find something else to do!!!!

I may have found a way to rid the ants.............Pardon me, wrong subject matter. While thinking of the subject at hand on a new Represenative, I mused the idea of someone(s) of having an 'impeccable' character that would win the seat if those so chose to do so,....and win handedly.
These are the names I thought of, and are known by most everyone already, so here goes. Judge Jerry Stokes, Circuit Clerk Roger Powell, Curtiss Thomasson, Rhett Butler, Special Probate Judge Leland Enzor, Frank Henderson, and Joseph C. Wingard. The last name, Mr. Wingard was almost taken off the list because if you fiqured
all the students still in Covington County that were in his classes for 39 years that would have been too tremendous of a vote count that's never been parralled in this county, even if just one third voted for him........A Landslide........

Bluecollarguy: Can one be a Mason, or must one be a Mason to run for office? Just asking.

Good Evening Shamrock,
No you do not even have to know what a Mason is, Shamrock, just know your communties and its people, and understand them and be able to communicate with them. Then take their needs to Montgomery to represent them in your 'best' possible effort. Just as you do with your previous post in this newspaper, and I commend you for all your concerns, as I do beleive them to be geniune.
'buscuits,......Thankyou for your reply about Leland Enzor.

I believe we should all take a break here and offer prayers for our young men at Ft. Hood. Be assured of my family's prayers for those who died and those who are wounded - we will pray for them and their families for some time.
May the blessing of God be upon them. amen.

I would like to know what kind of people ya'll might consider more equipped for a job like a State Representative besides someone who has a degree in Political Science and a Law Degree from a well to do university? Lawyers' are some of the most intelligent, hard-working individuals out there who work till the job, or client, has been taken care of. I am a student at AU, majoring in the Political Science department and plan to get my law degree and I am sure I could argue all day with ya'll certain individuals on how the system works and how a lawyer is better trained in the field to go to the state capital and represent district 93 better than someone who has no experience in law and the policy process, organization, and budgeting that law graduates attain from their higher education that they received. I say PUT A LAWYER IN DISTRICT 93!!!! VOTE MIKE JONES FOR REP.!!
