The Southern Outlaw Dragboat Association’s inaugural race on Florala’s Lake Jackson drew a crowd of spectators estimated between 1,000 and 1,200 Saturday, city officials said.
“There were about 10 boats and teams from Louisiana that backed out of coming because of the weather,” Mayor Terry Holley said.
Holley said several participants rented space in the RV park the city operates on the lake.
“I heard from a lot of people about what we could do to improve it,” he said. “We needed to have vendors out there, and slides and other activities for children, because it does get to be a long day fro them.
Councilwoman Deborah Inabinett also said the event was a good one for Florala.
Council members agreed to close the lake to swimmers and boaters to allow the Dragboat Association to host the event, pegged as the Alabama Nationals on Lake Jackson.
